Scientific plagiarism: a growing problem in an era of shrinking research funding

BLACKSBURG, Va., January 24, 2012 -- As scientific researchers become evermore competitive for scarce funding, scientific journals are increasing efforts to identify submissions that plagiarize the work of others. Still, it may take years to identify and retract the plagiarized papers and give credit to the actual researchers.

David Mittelman, Ph.D.

David Mittelman, Ph.D.

David Mittelman, Ph.D., is an associate professor at VBI and the Department of Biological Sciences. He leads a team in the Medical Informatics and Systems Division investigating how the human genome changes over time. His lab develops assays and technologies that exploit these processes of change for basic research and therapeutic benefit. Recently a co-recipient of the prestigious NVIDIA Foundation’s Compute the Cure award, Professor Mittelman is also developing a genome analysis framework for detecting genome changes.
